What is your role at Communities for Youth and what kinds of things will you be responsible for?

I am the Data Analyst for Communities for Youth. In this role, I take the surveys and data sets we have and transform them into useful insights the team can share with stakeholders. I do this through easy-to-interpret visualizations and more advanced statistical techniques to highlight where communities can focus their efforts on upstream prevention.

What drew you to working with C4Y?

Before moving to Idaho, I worked at a civic engagement nonprofit, where I regularly partnered with high school and college students and saw firsthand the benefits of youth-driven community work. More recently, I served as a research analyst for Ada County Juvenile Services, supporting their detention and probation departments and the County's Youth and Family Services Center (The Bridge).

It was an eye-opening experience that demonstrated the positive effects of upstream intervention for young people. C4Y helps communities across Idaho build supportive environments for youth by strengthening social and environmental protective factors while reducing the risk factors so many of them face day to day. What sets C4Y apart from my work with Ada County is how far upstream it focuses its prevention efforts.

What are you most excited about working on at C4Y?

Ever since I was a kid growing up in Reno, Nevada, I've had a deep commitment to charity and community. As a young person, I was involved in Scouting, and my first job out of college was in the nonprofit space. I've seen the positive change that happens when communities come together to solve problems.

When my wife and I moved to Idaho to be closer to family, we were amazed by how strong the sense of community was here and how warmly we were welcomed into the fold. I'm excited to work with partners across the state who embody that sense of "Idahome" and want to make Idaho a model for youth mental health and well-being.

What's something you like to do for fun outside of work?

I'm an avid fan of tabletop games of all sorts. Whether it's a friendly family game of dominoes, a competitive wargame with friends, or a weekend role-playing marathon, I'm all in. I own over 1,000 tabletop board and role-playing games and am always on the lookout for a new one. I used to host a podcast, but that gradually evolved into a geek-themed Substack where I publish an article a week on a wide range of geeky topics.
