Communities For Youth

Youth-Friendly Business Project

Recognizing that businesses are a key piece of what makes communities thrive, Communities for Youth is partnering with shops, cafes, community hubs, and more to create welcoming offline spaces that foster connection and protect teen mental health.

By bridging local businesses with youth well-being, we’re building a connected community where every teen feels seen and valued.

What does Becoming a Youth-Friendly Business Entail?

Becoming a Youth-Friendly Business with Communities for Youth means implementing practices and policies that value young people through design, intent, and impact.

Hire and prepare young people for future careers and success.

This can look like:

  • Regularly hiring a certain number of teens.

  • Offering volunteer, internship, or job-shadowing opportunities.

  • Being willing to be flexible for school and family situations, recognizing the unique challenges youth may face.

Treat youth customers and employees with respect and kindness.

This can look like:

  • Greeting and engaging with young people to help them feel welcome in your space.

  • Allowing respectful “hangout” time without purchase penalties.

  • Being open to youth feedback.

Supporting community events and activities for youth.

This can look like:

  • Hosting a youth event to foster connection and belonging.

  • Contributing in-kind support to local youth-focused events or activities hosted by local organizations.

  • Offering meeting or event space for youth groups or clubs when possible.

Benefits of Becoming a Youth-Friendly Business

  • Take pride in contributing to your community and its future!

  • Improve teen mental health and well-being. Research shows these improve when adults and institutions like businesses show teens they value them as part of the community.

  • Get recognized: Receive a Youth-Friendly Business sticker as well as recognition on our website and be promoted on our teen-facing social media
